Part A
Hospital insurance — what's covered and what it costs.
Part A is hospital insurance. It covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care after a hospital stay, hospice, and some home health care.
Most people pay $0 premium for Part A because they (or a spouse) paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years while working.
Key points
- Premium-free for most people at 65.
- Has a per-benefit-period deductible for hospital stays.
- Covers inpatient care, not doctor visits (that's Part B).
- You should usually enroll at 65 even if you're delaying Part B.
