Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Fills the gaps in Original Medicare — deductibles, copays, coinsurance.
Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance) is a private policy that pays some of what Original Medicare doesn't — like the Part A deductible, coinsurance, and copays.
You can only use Medigap with Original Medicare, not with a Medicare Advantage plan.
Key points
- Plans are standardized by letter (G, N, and others) — same benefits across companies.
- Your best time to buy is your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you're 65 and enrolled in Part B.
- During that window, insurers can't turn you down or charge more for pre-existing conditions.
- Medigap does not cover prescription drugs — you'd add a stand-alone Part D plan.
Common questions
Should I choose Medigap or Medicare Advantage?
Medigap costs more monthly but covers most out-of-pocket expenses and lets you see any Medicare provider. Advantage is often $0 premium but uses networks and has copays.
How do Medigap plans work?
